About Us

The Reede Scholars is a culturally, socially, politically, and professionally diverse group of physicians, dentists, and mental health professionals who are the combined graduates of the Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Minority Health Policy Fellowship, the California Endowment Scholars in Health Policy, and the Joseph L. Henry Oral Health Fellowship Program at Harvard Medical School.  Our mission, vision, and core values are summarized as follows:

Mission:

It is the mission of the Reede Scholars to engage and nurture a network of diverse leaders for collective action to achieve health equity.  We shall effect change through research, education, policy, practice, and charitable endeavors.

Vision:

To be a nationally recognized organization that works collectively to support one another, as well as, improve the health and social conditions of vulnerable and marginalized populations.

Core Values:

Respect for one another and those we serve.

Integrity in all we do.

Commitment to health and well-being for all.

Excellence always.

Currently, we actualize our mission with an annual meeting, an annual health equity symposium, a scholarship program, an annual Leadership Retreat, and research.  Our collective reach is immense.  As health directors and executives at national, state, and local agencies, administrators, researchers, deans, Professors, clinicians, and health consumers, we reach millions of people across the US and globally.  We seek to identify and implement innovative strategies to transform health care and improve health.  We have an appreciation for the social, environmental, economic, and political determinants of health and health care, and seek ways to mitigate these barriers.  Our overarching goal and commitment is to health equity and better health for all.

We are proud of our flagship program the Reede Scholars Annual Health Equity Symposium, now approaching tenth year, and held in conjunction with the annual Leadership and Development Program at Harvard.  The aim of the Health Equity Symposium is to bring together a wide array of perspectives on a given health equity and social justice topic to enlighten and empower our work.  Guided by the principles embodied in the Triple Aim - better patient experience, lower cost per capita, and improved population health – we work and seek research and grant opportunities that will ultimately lead to policy changes that transform the healthcare system; policies that will assure healthcare is available, acceptable, and accessible for all.

Our name is derived from our phenomenal program director, Dr. Joan Reede, Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership, Harvard Medical School.  In addition to completing the Minority Health Policy Program and the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree, some alum earned other Master degrees and certificates, such as in epidemiology and dental public health while at Harvard.

The three Fellowship programs are not a singular academic experience; it is life-long commitment, to give voice to the voiceless; to be a network of supporters; and to serve as thought leaders advancing transformational change in the US health care system.  With this shared experience, we desire to effect change in the lives of individuals, families, and the communities we serve.

While our organization is relatively young, the intellectual capital of the group is amazing!  Our alumni reflect expertise in every aspect of healthcare.  We desire to do more; with partners, we can and will do more.  We are excited and available to discuss opportunities for partnership and collaboration with like-minded organizations.
